Dates: 1991 – 1992
The Story
In 1991, I was accepted into the prestigious Accounting program at the University of Washington. While I was thrilled to have this opportunity, in looking at the demanding curriculum, I realized there was not an opportunity for me to study abroad which was a critical desire of my University experience. In my heart, I knew that learning about other countries, cultures and languages would serve me well in my future and open my eyes to opportunities. Rather than let the established curriculum defeat me, I met with faculty and other MBA students about establishing an international business program at UW. With full support of faculty, I became a founding member of the now prestigious Certificate of International Studies in Business.
The Impact
At the time, less than 10 per cent of students studied abroad, and I am proud of my global mindset, foresight and the risk it took to made it happen. Not only did I end up studying in an advanced business program in Seville, Spain, but I was hired by USAID to represent the United States as an employee at the United States Pavilion at the 1992 Worlds Exposition Fair. Working at Expo 92 alongside and in solidarity with people from every country in the world ended up being one of the most impactful roles of my life and solidified my desire to pursue a career in International Business. Almost 30 years later, the CISB Program is still going strong at the University of Washington. I currently serve as a mentor for CISB students and am a frequent guest presenter at the Business School focused on international business and leadership.
